National Happy Hour Day
The exact roots of Happy Hour aren’t completely clear, but what is clear is that the act of drinking, nibbling, and socializing before dinner goes way back. The custom certainly was underway in the United States during Prohibition, when people would enjoy cocktails at home or at speakeasies ahead of dining out at establishments where booze was banned.
And there are military associations as well. Beginning in the World War I era, the U.S. Navy held Happy Hours as everyday intervals of relaxation, conviviality, and entertainment.
By the 1950s and ‘60s, Happy Hour was entering the popular lexicon: an afternoon and/or post-work time to enjoy an adult beverage at a reduced price. Taverns and restaurants began offering not only drink specials, but also discounted small plates and bar bites to go along with them.
